New Holland Sales Stable

New Holland Sales Stable

New Holland Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest equine auction houses East of the Mississippi. Every week New Holland opens its doors to the buying and selling of unwanted horses. While the auction is open to the general public, it also attracts meat buyers from Canada and Mexico who are interested in meeting a weekly quota for horse meat. While Americans do not eat horse meat, it is not an uncommon food source in Europe. Due to a lack in regulated drug records detailing medications that are administered to equines, the U.S. banned the practice of horse slaughter in 2007 to prevent health risks and illness. This has not stopped the U.S. from continuing to allow horses to be shipped to neighboring countries for processing and European meat sales.
